The title of Jucamaya's second album, Curious Terrain, was inspired by a trip to the canyons in Utah, USA, a few years ago by composer/pianist Graham Dent. It is a mix of tracks with wide ranging moods from two recording sessions, the first in Sept 2007 by the same musician line-up as on the band’s first album Thinking of Joe, and the second recorded in May 2009 by the current band line-up with new bassist Tom Bull and new drummer Steve Laffy. The compositions of Graham Dent reflect his desire to exploit the versatile skills of the musicians. His tunes are always stylish, memorable and accessible, with a modern, sometimes driving, sometimes introspective feel, but always in tune with the jazz tradition. The album also includes My Song by Keith Jarrett, Silver’s Serenade by Horace Silver and the jazz standard I'll Remember April re-harmonised somewhat differently to the norm. The terrain may be curious but hopefully still accessible to your ears. Good listening.
