01/05/2008 Dave Stephens | ...beautiful tenor playing! I was playing a game with myself trying to detect influences...kept on coming back to Joe Henderson/Hank Mobley...that lovely postbop period...a touch of one of my favourites; Dexter maybe??? What I like about Pete's playing is that although he has great technique and ability, he doesn't feel the need to go all out to show it off, and as a result has a lovely lyrical approach which makes for a great sense of melody and phrasing. Everything sounds perfectly in control...very much like Dexter...nothing is hurried!! my kind of sax playing!! |
