Biography of Steve Koven

The Steve Koven Trio is a Canadian, Toronto based jazz group. The trio has been performing both nationally and internationally since 1993 with pianist Steve Koven, bassist Rob Clutton and drummer Anthony Michelli. The trio has performed in such venues and festivals as the Canadian Embassy Theatre Tokyo Japan, Jersey Channel Island Jazz Festival U.K. Barbados Jazz Festival, Jamaica Jazz Festival, Nassau Bahamas Jazz Festival, Montreal Jazz Festival, Ottawa Jazz Festival, Winnipeg Jazz Festival, Toronto Jazz Festival and the list goes on. They have shared the stage with such artist as, Nancy Wilson, John Pizzarelli, T.S. Monk, John Williams, Scott Hamilton, Ben Castle and Martin Speake.

In the Barbados Festival they appeared directly after John Pizzarelli, with the following review…

The band released their debut CD 'Live at the Senator' in 1997 which received national air play, as well as high praise from the music critics all over the country.

In 1999 they released their second CD 'Sandbox' which in addition to being featured on national radio has been played on Air Canada flights. In August 2000, the trio released their third CD 'Not By The Elbows', receiving both national and international reviews.

Their fourth CD, 'Lifetime', released in September 2002, has already received both national and international radio and press. The trio's repertoire consists of both standards and original material. The music is animated, adventurous and swings hard.

STEVE KOVEN - Piano Born in Toronto, Canada, Steve took up the piano at the age of seven. He earned a B.F.A. from York University studying free improvisation. Since graduation in 1987, Koven has pursued his career as a jazz pianist, composer and educator. He has continued his studies with various jazz artists including; Benny Green, Geoff Keeser, Bruce Barth, Mark Eisenman and Brian Rudolf. Aside from performing nationally and internationally with his own trio, Steve continues to work as a solo artist throughout Canada, U.S.A., the Caribbean and Europe. He has composed music for film, television and corporate video. He is co-founder and co-director, at Yellow Dog Music - an alternative music school focusing on creative improvisation and composition within a recording studio environment. As an educator, Steve has been teaching privately for 17 years and has conducted master classes, workshops and clinics at high schools, universities and festivals.
