Outhouse is pleased to announce the release of ‘Ruhabi’ on Loop Records, which features a 24-page booklet. Ruhabi was recorded at Livingston Studios (World Circuit), following a showcase concert at the Cheltenham Jazz Festival in May 2008, and produced at Abbey Road Studios (EMI).
At the end of 2007 Outhouse traveled to The Gambia to compose and perform with five traditional Sabar drummers. They worked together to create a unique body of music to present to UK audiences under the name Outhouse Ruhabi. These performances received rave reviews, a Jazzwise 3-page feature and airplay on BBC Radio3.
Outhouse Ruhabi beautifully stitch together two very different musical genres to create an inspiring and somehow seamless blend of serrated jazz grooves and West African Wolof rhythms that, not only entertain, but also explore territories that have not been ventured into previously.
The brainchild of Outhouse’s drummer and BBC Performing Arts Fund winner Dave Smith, Outhouse Ruhabi is the culmination of years spent studying West African rhythms whilst being rooted in the heart of today’s London contemporary Jazz scene. Thus, this unique project receives the support from Arts Council England, PRS-Foundation and the Jerwood Foundation.
Ruhabi Sabar drummers are:
Baboucar Camara – nder, tama Biran Saine – tambat, tama Laity Fye – mbongbong bala, voice Kaw Secka – tungene, chole, tama Mam Biran Saine – tungene, chole

Reviews |
20/06/2008 John Fordham | “Jubilantly gossipy talking-drum exchanges built to frenzied climaxes, while two saxophonists wound long-lined melodies over the polyrhythmic furor."
The Guardian, Cheltenham Jazz Festival ive review
| 27/07/0009 Jason Yarde | "I was knocked out by this project (Outhouse Ruhabi) when I saw them perform at Cheltenham (Jazz Festival) last year...
... This has got to be some of the most rootsy and fully realized music/musical collaborations you'll hear anywhere on the planet..."
