The follow-up to the highly successful Universal Syncopations of 2003, Miroslav Vitous's Universal Syncopations II explores a wider range of musical options than its predecessor - choirs loom out of the mix and orchestral colors swirl around a shifting cast of modern jazz players. However, like the first volume, US II also features a stellar line-up of modern jazz soloists: Randy Brecker, Bob Malach, Bob Mintzer, Gary Campbell. All four of these outstanding musicians make their ECM debut on this record. And Miroslav Vitous's uniquely expressive double-bass drives the music forward and has a central role to play in the ensemble interaction. Born in Czechoslovakia in 1947, Miroslav Vitous entered the Prague Conservatory at age 14 and immediately began playing his first jazz gigs. In his work, jazz and classical sensibilities were interlinked from the outset. In 1966 he immigrated to America and shortly thereafter was discovered by Miles Davis. Since then, Vitous has played with many of the marquee names in jazz - Herbie Mann, Stan Getz, Chick Corea, Roy Haynes, Wayne Shorter, and Joe Zawinul (with the former two he was a co-founder of Weather Report). While touring with Steve Kuhn in 1978, Vitous was invited to play on his first of many ECM recordings. He has since recorded on ECM with Terje Rypdal, John Surman, John Taylor, Roy Haynes, Chick Corea, Jan Garbarek, Jack DeJohnette and John McLaughlin. The 2003 edition of Universal Syncopations featured Corea, Garbarek, DeJohnette and McLaughlin and was met with unanimous praise from the fans and press alike.
