JAZZWISE Sept 2004

If you take the beginning of Karen Lane’s journey in jazz as dating from her 1994 support slot for Julian Joseph at The Basement jazz club in Sydney, then Taste could actually be considered the perfect celebration of a decade in jazz. Originally from Perth, Western Australia (whose government enquiry ‘Where have all the female jazz singers gone?’ must surely be just around the corner) and London-based since 1999, the raison d’être of Taste seems to be to bask in the engulfing beauty of the carefully selected material - and the singer certainly achieves this brilliantly. The album opener "Photograph begins with Lane’s voice in counterpoint with cello and the sparsest piano accompaniment, then blossoms into a chamber ensemble arrangement including Theo Travis’s perfectly judged sax solo and Julian Ferraretti’s unfussy string arrangement. So laid back that to listen to it you risk slipping a disc - delightful. Elsewhere the listener is treated to down-tempo takes on ‘My Foolish Heart’, ‘I Fall in Love Too Easily’ and another Jobim classic, ‘Corcovado’. As well as producing and arranging, Lane contributes three self-penned compositions to the 12 track collection: ‘Nothing More Than You’, which even at the first listen sounds canonical, the sweetly sentimental ‘Just The Same’ and the languidly atmospheric title track. Perfect for those balmy summer evenings (remember them?), a direct mailshot to Parky and – most important of all- a genuinely heartfelt homage to the profound allure of bossa nova.

To my ears Karen Lane's second album is even better than her first, it is
full of good songs finely sung and with a group of musicians sympathetic to
the singer. All the numbers are either bossa novas or are Latin tinged and
unlike the recently reviewed John Pizzarelli "Bossa Nova" album this one
really works. Karen's singing voice lends itself ideally to this type of
number and the selection of tunes is spot on with a mixture of well known
standards, lesser known songs and three of Karen's originals. Unlike many
original compositions that appear on vocal albums, Karen's actually work and
have a quality that sticks in the memory long after the album has finished...

...My Favourite track on the album is "I Fall In Love Too Easily" and has a
super vocal backed by some nice tenor by Nathan Haines, there is also a good
single note guitar solo by Dave Colton, a cracking track. The albums title
track "Taste" is another good original by Karen with some great violin work
again from Julian Ferraretto. The album closes out with Jobim's "Corcovado"
which is a fitting finale and again is stunningly arranged and gives the
singer just the right amount of space.

This is an album I keep going back to with it's excellent choice of
material, it's spot on arrangements and vocals that fit it all like a glove.
I highly recommend this album to anybody who likes something a little
different to some of the second rate albums we are fed by the big companies.

"While so many UK-based vocalists merely go through the motions with a real book and piano trio, Karen Lane has surrounded herself with a lighter more flexible group for this bossa inspired album. Percussion, guitar and Andy Hamill's solid double bass supply the framework for Lane's after-dark vocals, but what really elevates the sound is the extraordinarily subtle arrangements of strings and alto flutes. Like Jobim himself, Tom Cawley knows the power of adding just a few notes at the piano, and Lane's own compositions are very strong too. Refreshingly good".

02/08/2004 Bruce Crowther Jazz Writer

"... A lithe swing and elegant phrasing marks her out as does her repertoire, which mixes standards with well known jazz songs and some attractive originals by Karen who also writes her own arrangements..... This second CD, which is more ambitious, has Karen seeking and achieving a "sparse interaction of strings, percussion and voice where each instrument's beauty has space to breathe and resonate." Wholly admirable in concept and execution, the second CD demonstrates that this is a singer of quality and also that most intangible of elements, and one so often absent in popular music today, Taste".
