“..an emphasis on collective improvisation and less of a focus on individual soloists than you might find in traditional jazz. It also grooves like hell, with Manington's acoustic bass and Giles' sprightly drums laying down some thick, beefy yet, at the same time somehow mercurial riffs – full of stops, starts, wrong turns and dead ends, yet rocking in the grip of a savage momentum..” JAZZWISE

20/10/0008 chris parker - vortex

Bassist/composer Dave Manington describes his own music as based incollective improvisation but compositionally wide-ranging, taking ininfluences from classical music and jazz inspirations such as WayneShorter (an apparently increasingly important figure for a largenumber of contemporary jazz musicians). His album features fellow LoopCollective members (and Vortex regulars) Mark Hanslip (tenor), IvoNeame (piano, Fender Rhodes, alto saxophone) and drummer Tim Giles, and is pretty well described by the short MySpace summary referred toabove: slightly nervy, restless, subtly shifting themes are exploredby his sinuously interweaving bandmembers, Hanslip employing histrademark dry, pleasantly throaty sound to great effect throughout, and Neame moving easily between probing acoustic piano work and moreatmospheric Fender Rhodes as required by the compositions' varyingatmospheres and moods. Manington and Giles provide robust rhythmicsupport, Giles in particular constantly pushing and prompting, imparting pleasantly clattery bustle to the more up-tempo pieces andimbuing the quieter moments with brooding intensity. Overall, anabsorbing and oddly compelling album, another quiet triumph for theconsistently intriguing Loop Collective.
