Biography of Jess Abrams

Born to parents who were pioneers of the hippie / psychedelic art scene, Jess has been surrounded by musicians and artists from the start. Like Jess and her family, her first album is an eclectic mix of styles and genres. It is full of music reflecting different stages in Jess’s life. There’s Amour Amour Amour from a French fairytale film she saw as a child and tunes by Cat Stevens and Phoebe Snow who played as she and her mother travelled around the States in their bright red van. Then there is Hungry Wolf from Jess’s days as a punk in New York City, some of her favourite jazz tunes and an original written by bass player, Tony Overwater with Jess’s own lyrics.

Further information:
Brought up in New York City, Woodstock, New Mexico and occasionally a red van, Jess was surrounded by art and music from the start. Her mother loved Joni Mitchell, James Taylor, Cat Stevens and Phoebe Snow (to name but a few!) making them the soundtrack of her childhood. Jess’s grandparents loved the big band swing era, Ella Fitzgerald and Judy Garland and that music filled her ears when she visited them on Long Island. Teenhood started with a ‘Gabba Gabba Hey’ – the Ramones being Jess’s first major concert. Therein started her punk days – the only sidetrack she’s taken from singing.

Jess started singing as a child and has performed for over a decade working in New York, the UK and The Netherlands. She’s studied with some inspiring musicians including Kirk Nurock, Jay Clayton and Nina Sheldon. She also studied at Mannes College in New York –the classical Conservatory of The New School.

As far back as Jess can remember her father has been painting. As a child she used to sit up well into the night watching his paintings evolve as he worked – from this she learned that the process, or journey, is as valuable, if not more so, than the final product. Her father doesn’t plan how his paintings will turn out, he just strives to convey something honest and true in his work. This is what she strives for in her music making – an honest and truthful telling of a story. When the song, the collaboration and the vibe is right the rest of it happens by itself…
