Having performed together for around a decade in numerous settings, and individually in other projects internationally, and also alongside some of the UK’s finest jazz musicians, this is an opportunity to hear Dave Jones and Ashley John Long in a much more intimate setting.

This was Jones’s first studio recording since the highly acclaimed Dave Jones Quartet ‘Resonance’ CD from 2012 (DJT005) which was featured in Mark Gilbert’s profile on Jones in Jazz Journal, an album that featured Long, as did Jones’s London Evening Standard Jazz CD of the week ‘Journeys’ (DJT004), and the more recent ‘Live at AMG’ (DJT006) from 2014.

Postscript was recorded in September and December 2015 in an excellent acoustic at the BBC Studio in Swansea from which the poet Dylan Thomas broadcasted many of his recordings.

Jones and Long have produced a reflective album based on a nicely varied programme of material including two originals each, alongside tunes by Kenny Kirkland, Bud Powell, Ellington, Monk, Kern, and Dameron.

01/05/2017 Mark Gardner, for Jazz Journal. **** rating

Pianist Dave Jones and bassist Ashley John Long have been close collaborators for several years, and have made three CDs previously. This duo recital, though, is a much more intimate exposition of their mind-reading rapport as individual musical lines converge seamlessly. Each participant contributes two tunes apiece, and they are good, substantial constructions. Then they get down to reviving some serious gems by Duke Ellington, Bud Powell, Tadd Dameron, Thelonious Monk, Kenny Kirkland and Jerome Kern. If you detect a bias towards the pianist-composers that is as it should be in this setting.

Jones's strands of influence are never obsessive, but a Bill Evans flavour emanates from an important ingredient: he has a winsome touch on the keyboard and swings easily when required. Long belongs in the company of today's accomplished modern bassists who are sufficiently upskilled to take on any eventuality. His arco work is quite superb. I loved in particular the interpretations of Bud, Tadd and Thelonious. Ladybird is a peach of a performance.

Incidentally, Dave Jones is the very same fellow who contributes to Jazz Journal's pages, writing well in that form too. With Long here he has produced a most refreshing and reflective release, recorded in the studio where poet Dylan Thomas made many of his historic broadcasts.

05/09/2016 Mike Collins

“The CD has repaid repeated listens hovering, like the gig, around standards territory but spiced with originals from both partners as well as their distinctive playing. Jones is a fluent, rhythmically driving and inventive player as at home with jazz as more folk and rock inflected pieces.

Ashley has reputation for his extraordinary technique in both the contemporary classical and jazz world, … but concentrating on that would be to miss his flair as an improviser and writer. His contributions inspire Jones to lyrical and soaring solos especially on Zebedee, a deceptively simple and attractive bossa. Jones’ own Four on Three, a free wheeling waltz and Postcript , more of a rocky groover, both have plenty of piano and bass locked together and Long stretching out and showing the extent of his melodic imagination.” (Mike Collins, Sept 2016).
