12/03/2009 Tony Benjamin **** | Andrew Colman Quartet – I Remember You (33Jazz Records)
As a ‘Colman Brother’ he makes tightly produced retro-sounding dance music but on his own, trumpeter Andrew Colman is a jazz musician and this album is proper jazz. The seven tracks are well chosen both for their melodic strength and the way they match the band’s cool, reined-in temperament. Colman plays with economy and an understatement throughout, leaving his harmonic ideas to speak for themselves. He’s ably assisted by the thoughtful sparseness of Jamil Sheriff’s piano and the rhythmic empathy between Jon Thorne’s rounded double bass and Jon Perry’s drums. There’s a clear groupthink going on which gives an admirable tightness to the brief and bopping ‘Sonnymoon for Two’, but also allows a compellingly fluid reading of Herbie Hancock’s ‘Speak Like A Child’ to float in and out of focus like a flag in a breeze – two highpoints in a generally excellent recording.
