Drummer Stu Browns new sextet album explores the weird and wonderful musical world of Raymond Scott, the man who made the cartoons swing.
The 19 track CD showcases the bands energetic and accurate recreations of Raymond Scotts zany 1930s descriptive jazz (which was later featured in the Warner Bros cartoons) alongside two imaginative re-workings of his electronic pieces. From the opening pounding drum intro to Square Dance for Eight Egyptian Mummies, the listener is transported in to a bizarre world of Wooden Indians, Hungry Cannibals, Haunted Houses, and Toy Typewriters. Scotts forgotten gems are brought back to life through meticulous transcriptions (mostly by Brown), which the band negotiate with humour, virtuosity and slick ensemble playing. The recording was made possible with assistance from the Scottish Arts Council. |
