Biography of Nigel Patterson

Nigel Patterson is a Wellington based composer/keyboardist.
Having graduated from Massey University Conservatorium in 2003 with a BMUS in Jazz Piano Performance, Nigel has established himself as one of NZ’s most highly - regarding keyboard players and composers.
He has performed in many different contexts from boutique venues to stadiums in NZ, Australia, Europe and USA.
Some of his early groups included The Side Effects, a 5 piece Garage-Surf band which gained a large local following and released the CD “Gold Apache” in 2001.Followed by The Chandeliers, a Hammond fuelled psychedelic surf/exotica trio which released “Surf,Space,Exotica” 2004 and the “Diamondo” Vinyl EP in 2006.
In 2005 He composed a large scale work for 17 instruments named “EVOLUTION”. It received “Best Fringe Music Award” in The Wellington Fringe Fesival 2005.The following year his solo work “I Keyboard” received a favourable mention in the 2006 Wellington Fringe Festival.
He was a member of The Flower Orphans and Village of the Idiots with Anthony Donaldson – which performed in the 2006,2007 Wellington International Jazz Festival and also held the prestigious place of being Damo Suzuki’s(ex frontman from Can) band on his past 2 NZ tours.
In 2006 he became a member of Wellington band The Black Seeds – this has seen him tour extensively throughout NZ, Australia, Europe and the US. Last year the Black Seeds released their fourth studio album “Solid Ground” this went to No2 in the NZ charts and has been released in NZ, Australia, UK and the USA.
In 2007 he established his own jazz piano trio “The Nigel Patterson Trio”. This trio plays all original compositions and has performed throughout Wellington including the 2007 Wellington International Jazz Festival.
Also in 2007 saw the formation of The Mantarays , a 3-piece Organ based group with fellow musician Anthony Donaldson and Daniel Beban. The Mantarays released a self-titled EP in 2008 which was received very favourably amongst critics, musicians and the public. This EP was recently released on 12” Vinyl through Velvet Tiger.
In 2009 he was a member of the FLY MY PRETTIES:GRAND TOUR which played to sold out houses across NZ and the resulting cd from the tour went to No 1 in the NZ charts.
