Biography of Fiona Nehama Abrahami

Born in the year Miles Davis took jazz modal with the release of Kind of Blue, Nehama’s first instrument was piano, but her first experience of being in a band was song-writing, playing guitar and singing backing vocals for a high school pop-rock group. When she left school to go to art college in Derby she switched to fretted, fretless, and upright bass in a jazz-rock, and later a jazz-punk band. She also played a few gigs for the East Midlands Youth Jazz Orchestra and attended jazz summer school in Milton Keynes where she met jazz composer Neil Ardley, with whom, as they lived in the same area, she studied briefly before moving away to art college in Hull.

Once at her new college Nehama formed a band with fellow students playing punky reggae. Then under the direct influence of the Specials (with whom her band’s singer had connections), they joined the 2-Tone movement, toured with the Beat and landed a contract with Polydor, who released the band’s two singles. This led to an opportunity to record an album with the legendary Desmond Dekker.

In the early 80s Nehama ran an independent record label and produced a number of singles, EPs, and albums by local East Yorkshire bands, including a reggae-jazz fusion band she formed with Jamaican and African students from Hull University. In 1983 Nehama moved to London and was involve in many diverse musical projects, including as a live sound mixer at various venues and a night club manager in Brixton.

Then came computers!

Planning to return to college to study the then new subject of Music Tech., Nehama took a job in the IT department of a City firm to gain some ICT experience. Weeks turned into months turned into years, and before she knew it she had a whole new career as a technical author and systems trainer working internationally for some of the biggest global IT firms like IBM and HP. Though she never gave up composing or playing, music didn’t get the time or attention she would have liked to give it.

Divorce, a death in the family and illness caused Nehama to reassess her life, and re-evaluate what was important to her; consequently she returned to the UK and to music. Not as a performer, but as a composer interested in blending her eclectic tastes and pushing the theoretical envelope. Or, put another way: expressing her soul through advanced concepts with a pop aesthetic. She does still write, though about music now, and in 2005 attended the JazzWise “Write Stuff” seminars at the London Jazz Festival.
