The new album recently released on the 33Jazz label. The follow up to Static Shock (Elabeth, 2005: www.elabeth.com). With the exception of tracks 4, 10 (both by bassist Mauro Gargano)and 11 (Wayne Shorter), this album is comprised of original composition by Sam Coombes.

Reviews

11/11/2009 Vincent Bessieres for Jazzman (regarding Static Shock)

‘Something of a rarity today, Coombes plays alto and tenor saxophones, demonstrating equal abililty on each. It is undoubtedly his performance which stands out against a backdrop of seamless quartet playing. He often demonstrates a certain daringness in his solos, especially on the alto, where sparks really fly.’

16/10/2009 Jacques Chesnel for Culture Jazz

‘The album gets off to a flying start, with an alto solo reminiscent of Jackie McLean, which for me is an important benchmark. Alternating vigorous rhythms and soft ballads, whether it be on alto, soprano or tenor saxes, a powerful energy is maintained throughout the whole record, without ever wavering.’

13/10/2009 Jean slamowicz for Jazz Hot

‘Here is a second album which produces a much welcome shock that has nothing static about it. The music of this British player is founded on an ease of execution and a controlled complexity which is in fact quite spectacular. Sam Coombes is an alto player (his best sax) whose virulence makes one think of Vincent Herring. He is capable of densely packed soaring phrases and has a real talent for melodic lines which are both dense and intricate.’

10/09/2009 Jacques Aboucaya for Jazz Magazine

‘The richness of the background musical knowledge of these young musicians with irreproachable technique is evident. They have managed to incorporate into this album such a variety of feels and tempos, and such a feeling of urgency, that their music deserves careful attention.’

01/09/2009 Jazzman (regarding Static Shock)

'coombes often demonstrates a real daringness in his solos, and especially on alto where the sparks really fly.'

12/08/2009 Vincent Fertey for Musiqualité

‘If the technical mastery of this music surprises on first listen, it’s also the originality of the compositions which makes this a quality album.’

04/08/2009 Jean-Marc Gelin for Dernieres nouvelles du jazz

'This album is a real little gem. It’s the sort of recording that you aren’t expecting and which really bowls you over. Firstly and above all because we discover an extraordinary saxophonist equipped with incredible technical abilities […] when a saxophonist displays such powerful playing, such precision in his attack, such clarity in his phrasing and such assurance in his playing, we know we are dealing with a (future?) great.’
