Biography of Tom Arthurs
Winner of the Peter Whittingham Award and BBC Jazz Awards Rising Star nominee, trumpet player and composer Tom Arthurs (born 1980) has fast been making a name for himself on the international jazz and improvised music scene.
Recently featured on BBC Radio 3's Jazz on 3 both with his own trio, arthurs.høiby.ritchie and in duo with star pianist John Taylor, Tom has appeared at festivals including Cheltenham, Bath, London, Moers and Jerusalem. Tom was recently selected for the 2007 Serious/Jerwood/PRS Foundation Take Five scheme for up-and-coming British musicians.
Having released three successful albums on London independent Babel and an EP with Icarus' Ollie Bown, Tom is now working on projects with his trio arthurs.høiby.ritchie (with Jasper Høiby and Stuart Ritchie), pianist Richard Fairhurst, and the Tom Arthurs / Ollie Bown Electric Duo. Recently commissioned by Brighton-based Lighthouse, the duo have been working on interactive video and sound using Max/MSP and will be appearing in a series of concerts with Not Applicable artists including Lothar Ohlmeier (bass clarinet), Maurizio Ravalico (percussion) and Isambard Khroustaliov (computer).
Besides his own projects Tom has recently been performing and recording with Richard Fairhurst, Ingrid Laubrock, Max de Wardener, Matthew Bourne, Kenny Wheeler, Chartwell Dutiro, Julie Sassoon, Lothar Ohlmeier, Timeline, F-IRE Collective Large Ensemble, the Balkanatics, Mônica Vasconcelos and Nois, Justin Quinn, Jonathan Bratoeff, Pete Wareham, JazzXchange Dance and Music Company, Peter van Huffel (NY), electronic music manipulators Icarus, Pest and Sa-Ra Creative Partners. Tom has also been sonicly-spotted as off-stage trumpeter in The Mighty Boosh.
Tom is a member of the F-IRE Collective, and is also part of Not Applicable.
Tom studied with Dave Douglas, Joe Lovano and Jim Black at Banff Centre for the Arts (Canada) back in 2001.
