Fly Agaric’s forthcoming debut album, In Search of Soma ('Soma' being a fabled Divine Drug used by the Gods and those who wished to see like them) is a journey of striking composition, virtuosic performance, an electric, almost telepathic communication between the players and spontaneous composition of a kind that's only possible 'in the moment'. In Search of Soma takes its lead on the one hand from the awesome improvisational poise and fluidity of Keith Jarrett and The Paul Motian Trio whilst displaying the kind of honking, brassy, hollering attitude that brings such joyful intensity to the work of Charles Mingus and Roland Kirk on the other. All this is filtered through a wide eyed, psychedelic approach characterised by inspired improvisational flights that run the gamut from straining fervour to serene beauty, woven through with clattering percussion and orbited by looping chimes, sheets of accordion and whooping bird-like sounds. In Search of Soma is a bold, authoritative opening statement from a band who have well earned comparisons with the like of fellow F-IRE Collective maestros Polar Bear.

Produced by acclaimed trumpeter/producer Alex Bonney (Hans Koller, Evan Parker, Bill Frisell) over the course of a week in the sweltering August of 2011, the middle of mushroom season, at Greenaway House Studios and mixed together with the band In Search of Soma embodies that rare and difficult-to-find 'Live' sound that puts the listener right there at the centre of the collective improvising process and is a relative rarity in the age of 'Fix it in the Mix' recording.

In Search of Soma ripples with dynamic contrast throughout, from the bluesy, insistently fiery peaks of Arrête ça tout de suite (meaning literally ‘stop it right now’) to the gentle but by no means sedate off-centre waltz of 'Country Song', it represents an adventure in sound and performance without ever allowing itself to stray from the path of Collective Intention toward self-indulgence or irrelevence.
