Biography of Stereoset

Stereoset have emerged from the clubs and bars of Yorkshire - building a reputation for beautiful arrangements and delivery of the American songbook. The music is a sublime combination of the soulful belief in Lyn Acton`s velvet voice, Tommy Harland's relaxed charm on guitar, Ken Marley's precision and fun on bass with John Perry's classical and perfect jazz drums.

Firstly a duo of Lyn and Tommy, formed from the 90's acid jazz scene touring festivals and nightclubs, Stereoset have attracted a solid following amongst the jazz clubs of Yorkshire and this year open the Wigan Jazz Festival as testimony to the respect and interest the quartet is earning.

"If they gigged in New York they`d be world famous by now" said Richard Palmer, editor of the Oscar Peterson biography.

Mike Pinfold, co-author of "Singing Jazz" describes Lyn`s voice as "the real thing".

She started her career singing Frank and Ella as her Dad held up his hand for the microphone - five at the time! Projects and bands in African Hi-life, Tamla, Country and Samba have formed a semi-pro career dating back twenty years, including sessions on a Mercury Prize nominated album.

After her 8-piece touring outfit Pearl's Cab Ride were repeatedly booked in for jazz festivals with great acclaim and encouragement, Lyn has gradually returned to the classics. Stereoset's jazz audiences have welcomed the quality that Mike Pinfold describes as Lyn's "unaffected and artless manner…giving every line credibility".

Tommy Harland was once runner-up in a national jazz competition, but refuses to let it be known! He prefers to play his guitar in his way, allowing others to create around his careful tones and timbre. His stylistic playing has featured on several CD's in the ambient and dance genres through Pork Records and he continues to develop other sides of his playing in free jazz styles and blues projects.

John Perry is well-known throughout Yorkshire, backing all the top touring acts and never being short of work. He was part of Pat McCarthy`s quintet for many years before beginning to focus on the teaching of jazz alongside the session work and gigs with Stereoset.

When a recent journalist criticised British musicians, JazzUK cited Ken Marley as a person he had obviously not heard! Ken refreshes the standards repertoire with the same energy he expounds in his own compositions released with his trio on Crimson Records. He provides Stereoset with harmonic and structural resonances to enhance their distinctive balance of strength, subtlety and soul.
