Biography of Timeline

TIMELINE was formed in 1995 from a collective of jazz musicians studying African music. After 2 years careful preparation, they began playing round the UK and Europe in 1997 with dazzling original music reuniting the surprise of jazz with the fire of traditional African rhythms.

Timeline is part of a small network of bands that feature creative work in forms of integrated rhythmic expression - music, language and movement. Dance and music groups such as ROOTS OF UNITY, AKWAABA DRUM ORCHESTRA and MÉTA MÉTA were all formed round the members of Timeline with their unique versatility on both African and European instruments and their expertise in dance music across a multitude of styles.

Timeline has also been at the forefront of Jazz/African dance collaborations with their work alongside Bullies Ballerinas and with their own team of dancers lead by Rubba and Ghanaian master musician Nana Tsiboe.

Timeline are: Barak Schmool: alto sax, percussion ; Nick Ramm: keys, xylophone ; David Okumu: guitar ; Tom Herbert: bass ; Leo Taylor: drumkit ; Ivan Ormond: percussion

Méta Méta are: Barak Schmool: alto sax, percussion ; Maurizio Ravalico: drums, vocals; Finn Peters: alto sax / flute; Nick Ramm: keyboard; Tom Mason: bass; Iian Pattinson: drumkit

Press TIMELINE
"…One of the country's most exciting jazz acts in performance"
Neil Bennun, Straight No Chaser, October 1999

“Timeline are one of the country's most exciting jazz acts in performance.”
Neil Bennun, Straight No Chaser, October 1999

"...their music curves and dives in so many different directions that they find thousands of tunnels of escape inside every beat. ... when Timeline play their bass heavy rhythms they untie their moorings and face the rapids."
Kate Wharton, Straight No Chaser, May 2003

"... a funky stew of improvised jazz and funky spirituals... keep your eyes out for them live"
Max Cole, Straight No Chaser, Mar 2003

"…as soulful as it is experimental… the traditional roles of each instrument are subverted, and arrangements are painstakingly crafted … it has a sound of its own: the input of multi-cultural rhythms dominates, and while the creative concepts are ambitious, the music is actually accessible…a fresh attitude to improvisation…"
Tom Barlow, Jazzwise, Dec 2002

"...a versatile jazz offering... The dizzying complexity of the melodic soundscape races ahead time and time again, offering the jazz listener thegenuine article."
Luke Prater, Songlines, Nov 2002

"It's very catchy."
Alex Kasriel, Hendon Times, Aug 2003

Press Méta Méta
“...[their] speciality is rhythmic experimentation, and the pieces exploited the tensions, embraces and collisions between the guitar and Leo Taylor's brittle, asymmetrical drum patterns, Tom Herbert's anchoring bass grooves, Nick Ramm's bursts of Cuban-piano cheerleading and Barak Schmool's thoughtful alto-sax lines. Vocalist Maurizio Ravalico gave the music an impassioned gravity, negotiating the treacherous tempos with stabbing hand movements that seemed like guidelines to himself as much as the audience. Slowly the set developed into a fascinating accumulation of a kind of African hi-life bebop, Joe Zawinul's world jazz and cutting-edge Buena Vista improv...”
John Fordham, The Guardian, October 24, 2003

“This is a family affair: a battery of fully-qualified batá drummers, with guitar, bass, keyboards, sax, a percussion-playing choir or singers and an approach to time signatures owing a little to Steve Coleman's New York future funk making a seriously deep noise. This is jazz and music of West African origin with the internal organs joined.”
Neil Bennun, Straight No Chaser, October 1999
