Live at the Athens Concert Hall was most recorded live in Athens, Greece in 1998, but the last track was recorded at the Poly Plaza Theatre in Beijing, China. It was released on the Arc label in 1999. The Athens band features Trevor Watts on alto and soprano saxes, Colin McKenzie on bass guitar, Marc Parnell on drums, Ali laazane on shakers, djararbouka and karkabas and Nana Tsiboe on djembe, talking drum and voice. In Beijing Paapa J Mensah is on djembe, Roberto Pla on tambourine and timbales and Greg Leppard on Drums with Ali laazane, Colin McKenzie and Trevor Watts.

Reviews

01/01/1999 Tim Price.

"The spiritual communication in Moire Music Group runs high, they create sounds of improvised music making that address many ethnic strands of music and culture. You'll hear folk type melodies alongside material based on jazz rhythms and improvisational interplay. The sound of the jungle and the hillsides merge happily with the razzmatazz of modern life..... What I adore about this music is that the rhythmic requirements are not cliché nor predictable. The music reveals a deep commitment and conviction."

"Listening to Live at Athens Concert Hall, I can't help but be reminded a bit of the electric LP Sam Rivers recorded for Impulse, Sizzle (which Watts has never heard), and Ornette's Prime Time stuff. Though Watts' group sounds nothing like Weather Report (though MacKenzie's ringing fretless bass work reminds me of Jaco's), for me both groups occupy the same emotional terrain: this is celebratory, joyous and uplifting music. Highly recommended".
