As at home with John Dowland (whose "Lachrymae" provide the inspiration for half the music on this wholly absorbing album) as with Charlie Parker or Hermeto Pascoal, UK pianist Huw Warren demonstrates a commendably wide-ranging talent on this, his second solo outing on Babel. By turns gently lyrical and pungently vigorous, but consistently original (his sparing use of electronics and the instrument's insides is a striking feature of his music), Warren is one of Britain's most accomplished pianists.
