Cathie Rae is a singer whose progress in the last few years has been one of the many highlights in Scottish jazz. She fronts a band, which features Martin Kershaw (saxes) and Steve Hamilton (piano), singing original new tunes, influenced by Rickie Lee Jones and Christine Tobin, as well as the classic jazz vocal tradition.
Cathie, from something of a dynasty of Scottish Jazz musicians, is generally recognised as one of the most creative and impressive vocalists currently working in Scotland. She sings a marvellous mix of Jazz standards and more contemporary material, her repertoire being described as "..from Nat King Cole to Ricky Lee Jones", with some very impressive originals thrown in for good measure. She invariably works with the best players around and is highly respected throughout the UK. A rare chance to hear this excellent singer south of the border.
Written by: Steve Rubie, 606 jazz Club prior to Cathie’s gig there in June 2005
Cathie Rae's new CD Flow is a ballad orientated album that features some of the very best young musicians in Scotland. Cathie mixes familiar standards such as Here's that Rainy Day and Angel Eyes with more unusual offerings such as Still we Dream, a vocal version of Monk's Ugly Beauty and original compositions and arrangements from Cathie, Julian Arguelles and Sandy Wright. Her influences include Carmen McRae, Bob Dorough and Jay Clayton. The CD was produced by Julian Arguelles

13/08/2005 Rob Adams, The Herald | "THE senior sibling of the Rae family’s jazz sextet may have been the last to enter the swing business but she’s making up for lost time now with a second album that shows growing assurance over a wide range of jazz styles.
Coy, confident and brave enough to try old songs in new ways she (Cathie) sings with clarity and feeling whether in deep ballad mode or tempting the dance remix deejays with her own soul-jazz-styled “Tired of Lovin’ You”. Her partner, Julian Argüelles, lends sympathetic production and there are fine contributions from a band including saxophonist Martin Kershaw on an album that should take Rae’s career up another notch". , Saturday 13 Aug.05 | 01/08/2005 Edinburgh Jazz Festival Rep. | “The band, Cathie’s performance, her choice of material were all fantastic and the audience loved her!” | 01/08/2005 Jazz UK - Time Out | "..compelling" (– see website for full review) | 01/08/2005 Evening News (Live performance) | "..superb taste, astonishing perfection and real commitment" |
