Biography of Joe Robinson

Born 07/07/1963 Ramsgate, Kent, England. Married to Linda, 2 children Ella age 9 and Chloe age 3. Studied classical piano from age 6. Went to Chatham House Grammar School, Ramsgate. Left school at age 16 to tour with progressive rock group and played venues including Dingwalls, The Lyceum Theatre and the Music Machine in London playing hammond organ.

Took up saxophone in 1982 age 19 and started playing jazz in restaurants and bars in and around Canterbury, Kent. Moved to London 1984 and then on to Brighton, East Sussex in 1986.

1990 Formed The Acme Tune Company with brother Simon Robinson, Franc O’Shea, Tony Kenyan and Tristan Banks.

1992 Formed the Joe Robinson Quartet with Mark Edwards, Paul Whitten and Dave Trigwell. 1993 Studied at the Guildhall School of Music and Drama, London studying composition with Scott Stroman, instrumental studies with Stan Sulzmann and Jean Toussaint and attending masterclasses with Wynton Marsalis, Terence Blanchard and Kirk Lightsy. Also writing for and touring with the Guildhall Big Band, playing music by Kenny Wheeler with Tommy Smith and music by Jan Garbarek with Stan Sulzmann.

1994 Joined Terry Seabrook’s Cubana Bop and recorded the first album Can’t Stop Now with guest Bobby Wellins. Toured solidly with Cubana Bop for the next two years playing festivals and clubs including the Jazz Café and the 606 Club, London and with guests Pucho, Bobby Wellins and Frank Griffiths.

1995 Took teaching post at Chichester college teaching keyboard skills. Some private study with Bobby Wellins. 1996 Formed Four Corners with Simon Robinson, Nigel Thomas and Dave Trigwell playing original music by Simon Robinson and concentrating on Soprano Saxophone.Recorded the album Phrygian Man. Recorded the album Lydias List and toured with Dave Holdsworth Quartet with Nigel Thomas and Dave Trigwell.

1997 Toured with Tribute to Monk Nonet with Paul Rutherford. Recorded the album Mike McKoy’s Tribute to Getz / Gilberto with Bosco D’Oliveira and Anthony Kerr and toured including the 606 club and Pizza on the Park.

1998 Formed Tribute to Charlie Parker Septet featuring Geoff Simkins and played some select festival and jazz club venues. Recorded 30+ hours of unreleased material with the young guitarist Tom Carris, Nigel Thomas and Ron Parry. Recorded 30+ hours of unreleased music with the Joe Robinson Trio with Nigel Thomas and Ron Parry. 1998 Joined the Nigel Thomas Quintet with Mark Edwards, Winston Clifford, Byron Wallen/Duncan Mckay and recorded debut album Yoichi. Toured extensively with NTQ.

1999 Formed Joe Robinson Quintet with Neil Yates, Mark Edwards, Nigel Thomas and Ron Parry, playing original material by Joe Robinson, toured jazz clubs including Royal Festival Hall foyer event. 2000 Formed Gary Kavanagh/Joe Robinson Quintet with John Donaldson, Tom Herbert and Ron Parry playing hard bop, toured select jazz venues. Toured with Neil Yates – Praxis. Some private study with Peter King. 2001 Formed Joe Robinson Quartet with John Donaldson, Simon Thorpe, and Spike Wells and recorded debut album While I’m Waiting. Currently visiting teacher of music at Roedean School and Lancing College. Has also performed with Pete Jacobson, Mick Hutton, Don Weller, Alan Barnes, Bob Mover, Bryan Spring, Dick Pierce. in Norway.
