Biography of Ella Rooke

A young jazz singer, Ella has been touring festivals, jazz clubs and concert venues in the north of England, including appearances at The Mansion (Leeds), Scarborough, the Borders books and music chain and Pizza Express. Inspired by Stacey Kent and influenced by Nat King Cole and Anita O'Day, Ella is full of youth and energy. Her act has been described as "a breath of fresh air". First taught music by the pianist Nikki Iles, Ella was originally a saxophonist, playing lead alto in Oldham's Youth Swing Band and touring with a soul band in the east Manchester area. At Leeds College of Music, she switched to vocals and trained under Tina May. Ella first appeared as a singer at the Beverley Jazz Festival in September 2000. Since then the bookings have come thick and fast, as she's fronted various line-ups. She was recently the star billing at a sell-out Music for Africa gig at the Civic Hall, Uppermill (Saddleworth) in front of 350 people. The organisers have asked her back next year.

Her present band line-up comprises:

Garry Jackson - Bass. Finalist in the Group Category of the Perrier Jazz Awards (2000) and a graduate of Leeds College of Music, Garry has worked with some of Britain's leading Jazz musicians, including Guy Barker, Pete King, Herbie Flowers and Tina May. "A responsive, interactive bass player, ready for musical adventure." (Julian Joseph).

Sam Dunn - Guitar. At the age of 16, Sam was a semi-finalist for the Young Jazz Awards. He has recently been recruited for the National Youth Jazz Orchestra. Sam is in his final year at the Leeds College of Music.

Damian Cook - A graduate of Leeds College of Music, Damian plays 1st Alto for the National Youth Jazz Orchestra (Wales). He has also made Radio 3 recordings with the LCM Big Band and the James Taylor Quintet.

Rob Barron - Piano. An up and coming jazz pianist studying at Leeds College of Music, Rob joined Ella's band six months ago.

Ella has also worked with: Joel Purnell - Saxophone, Andrew Coleman (Trumpet/Flugel Horn) and Jamie Sheriff (Piano)
