Biography of Dave Blackmore
Dave Blackmore
1988-90 Dave formed the Sheffield based hard bop quintet Big Sun. He appeared on BBC2 supporting Jean Toussaint, Radio 4's kaleidoscope and featured Made in Sheffield jazz album. The band also performed with Kenny Wheeler and John Taylor and appeared at the Outside In Festival. In 1990 he won a scholarship to the Guildhall School of Music. Formed the first Dave Blackmore Quartet with gigs in London, the Midlands and the North. Performed on Jazz FM with Dave Murray.
Currently working in duo with Dave Frankel, in a trio with Paul Clarvis and Stuart Hall, and appeared on BBC Radio 3 with Diane McLoughlin's Giant Steppes. Toured with the Kubryk Townsend Quartet in Spring 98 and recorded their first CD. Worked with Peter Fairclough's group. In the world of folk music played with Gas Mark Five and is currently with Saxophony.
In 1994 he won the MCPS Best Original Composition award in BBC Radio 2 Big Band Competition. In 1996 commissioned by the Midlands Arts Board to write music for John Dankworth and the Walsall Jazz Orchestra to write music inspired by the painting of Braque. His music was recently featured on Swiss Radio DRS 2 in a program about new British jazz.
