Biography of David Tughan

Blue-eyed Irish Vocalist David Tughan was born in Northern Ireland in 1971. He came to London to study acting at the Guildhall School of Music and Drama and graduated in 1997. It was there that he met fellow students Simon Colam (piano), and Tom Herbert (bass) and later Chris Higginbottom (drums) who attended the Royal Academy. The group have been playing together for eight years now. While performing jazz whenever he could, David also managed to pick up a considerable amount of stage and other acting work ranging from stand-up comedy to Shakespeare (He has not surprisingly played Romeo in “Romeo & Juliet”). He has done several One man shows , and has enjoyed various roles in Stage Musicals such as “Joseph”, “Little Shop of Horrors” and “Caberet” even a stint playing Sammy Sax in the hit musical, “Saucy Jack and the Space Vixens” He last appeared as L(W)ogan In “Boom Bang-a-Boom” a Dr Who play for radio. He has recently been involved in the sell out success of the show “ZAM ZAM Room “ which was a popular Time Out critic’s choice at Ronnie Scott’s and Pizza Express Jazz club. This show has just been booked to run in the West End at the beginning of 2004.

Here is David, in his own words:

“Singing is sonic storytelling, it’s sort of an extension of acting for me, and you can improvise with it...”

I saw the count Basie orchestra on a holiday to Disney World twenty years ago and I couldn’t believe my ears. I realised in that moment that I wanted to learn more about this fascinating genre, everyone in the band looked like they were having so much fun and what’s more, some of them seemed to be making it up as they went along! From then on I was hooked, when I got home I got stuck into Oscar Peterson, George Shearing, Ray Charles, Nat King Cole, Ella Fitzgerald, Art Tatum, Charlie Parker, Miles Davis, Chet Baker and John Coltrane just to begin with!! I started to try to play piano like the people I heard on the records, I even bought a saxophone and started teaching myself to play.

I first sang in a small jazz club in Chester called Alexanders when I was a student up there, I have no idea why I asked the band if I could sing with them (I had to sing “It Had To Be You” In F!) but I gave it a go and I ended up singing there every Wednesday in a guest spot, until I got booked for my own night. Then when I moved to London I got playing with some of the Guildhall Jazzers in various dodgy gigs around town. Left Drama School, worked as an actor then decided to get the singing thing together and recorded this album with my old Guildhall jazz mates…the rest is future, as they say!

His Debut album “Just In Time” is a remarkable introduction to David’s unique and captivating style. Already receiving great reviews, this album will serve as a solid foundation to a long and successful career. David has a voice like no other male jazz vocalist; his looks and charm are a mere bonus. He will definitely be a star. – David Carr (MD of OT Records)
