01/10/2011 The Jazz Rag | Robert Fowler, stalwart of the last Lyttelton band, is equally adept on tenor and baritone saxes and a delightful clarinettist. I listened to the CD twice very carefully, then I thought about the great tenor quartet recordings in my collection - Getz, Sims, Hawkins, Young - and, in truth, I find this just as satisfying as those illustrious predecessors. Not the Fowler is especially like any of them, but he follows this tradition of eloquent, fluent, often conversational improvisation and has the rare quality of holding the listener's interest despite the realtively limited tonal palette of the format.
You really should hear this. |
