Reviews

01/10/2004 Ken Cheathan

"Whilst I don’t mind this album being classified as jazz – quite the contrary; it would be good to be able to claim it for our own – there is so much in it (it’s as free as a bird) that it might better belong in a classification such as Contemporary or Free Improvisation. It’s just that I feel that would be fairer for the music and musicians alike".

01/09/2004 Big Issue Review

"It is utterly original; at times ravishing and opulent, cajoling or bullying, it is suggestive of sensation in indistinct and conceptual ways. It can lead you astray or merely aside; it’s magmatic or like ripples in oil; it’s like walking into the sea against sunlight, on a brilliant but hazy Mediterranean day. It’s not all easy peasy; sometimes the going is hard. There’s no horizon. There’s colour but no form and at times you may lose your own way on your journey. Did you know where you were going? It’s Debussy and Ravel, as well. I love it".

01/09/2004 PAUL DUNMALL

"The genre of music you hear on this CD is the closest you will get to democracy in western music. No preconceived architecture, no discussing before performance. These four musicians walk on stage and sculpt music from the air".

02/08/2004 The Western Mail

"Endorsed by European jazz legend Keith Tippett, Cardiff-based quartet Full Circle are making waves on the Welsh Jazz Scene. Captured live in concert, Explorations is a quite remarkable début album that ventures from menacing piano and brooding bass to ethnic vibes and scorching saxophone. Full of restless invention and a profoundly pure musical sensibility, it’s a mesmerising and often thrilling statement of intent".

01/07/2004 KEITH TIPPETT excerpt from the liner notes

Just the mention of free improvisation can send some folks heading for the hills. True, it’s not the easiest kind of music to grasp (let alone make), but leaving all that aside, when treated the same way as any new CD that needs a couple or so listens, the music will speak for itself. Exploration is the first full album by four Royal Welsh college of Music and Drama graduates. Knuckling down in class gave them the full vocabulary to work with, and for, each other to an incredibly accomplished degree. There are no wordy titles to tell the listener what to expect, only the digits one to eight, and combined with a lack of pre-written strategy this means that whatever the listener accepts, absorbs or rejects in this music is the product of their own relationship with it. Heavy stuff? Not in the slightest. Piano and saxophone interplay like lovers, rhythms are edgy and provocative and the unity of direction is formed like wisps of smoke that curl then dissipate on a gentle breeze. The sleeve notes talk of democracy, and how true and pure is the notion. Free improv is new to me and if this inspirational, intelligent album is a signpost, I shall be following it to other instinctive and cerebral delights.
