Biography of Tim Garland

Tim Garland first made international waves through his work with Chick Corea. He is Composer-In-Residence at Newcastle university, being one of the UKs most noted composers and saxophonists working in jazz. Much of his output reflects interests beyond conventional jazz boundaries and he is increasingly acknowledged for large ensemble writing including orchestral based pieces. He works regularly with Acoustic Triangle and runs a number of projects of his own.

"Storms/Nocturnes" Garland's acoustic trio project with Geoffrey Keezer and Joe Locke is currently getting great reviews:

"It hardly gets better than this!" Mojo CD of the month

"Meaty harmonies underpin strong melodic lines tinged with references to Celtic folk strains and the blues. Garland plays each of his three horns as though it were his main axe, grabbing your attention with limber phrasing and a centered tone that projects both gravitas and fire." Downbeat (4 and a half stars)

"Garland is quietly, but quickly becoming one of the most important British jazz musicians in years"
Jazzwise

The second CD from Storms/Nocturnes, "Rising Tide" is due out this summer and is a tour de force of Garland compositions expanded on two tracks with a string quartet.

Other Press:

"not only a commanding saxophonist but a brilliantly inventive writer" The Independent

"One of my favourite saxophone players and composers" Chick Corea

"Garland has always sounded special, blessed with a weighty tone that
makes you switch on and want to listen, he is creative at speed and swings with momentum and grace" Time Out

"A world-class virtuoso" BBC music magazine

"Barnstorming solos, exemplary ensemble work, utterly distinctive" The Times

"A world class player; to qualify for such status, todays' jazz musician must not only solo like a dream, but compose and arrange expertly too, and Garland passes all three tests. Music for head and heart, this belongs on any list of jazz albums of the year" The Evening Standard on "Made by Walking"

"Formidable" John Fordham, The Guardian
