Biography of Alyson Green

Jazz has always played a large part in Alyson’s life. Her father was a professional jazz drummer and her maternal grandmother played saxophone with, amongst others, the BBC Radio Big Band, and as a small child Alyson would listen to Barbra Streisand, Mel Torme and Sarah Vaughan records while her friends would be playing pop music. Alyson began learning her craft at the age of 11 when she attended the Corona Academy Stage School in London as a full-time student. As a child she appeared in several high profile film and TV productions, most notable of which are the original Superman, starring the late Christopher Reeve, and Young Winston, a biopic of Winston Churchill. As an young adult Alyson toured in stage productions of Grease and The Rocky Horror Show. She then turned to her love of Jazz and embarked on a national tour, singing with Glen’s brother Herb in the Herb Miller Big Band, before forming her own quartet and gigging regularly around London.

After a break to raise her family, Alyson’s brand of mellow jazz can once again be heard in various venues in and around London, the South Coast, and Brighton (where she now lives). Picking up where she left off, Alyson is fast gaining recognition for her soulful interpretations of some of the great jazz classics.

Her debut album, Secret, sees Alyson collaborate with some of Britains finest Jazz Musicians including the world class Jim Mullen on Guitar and in-demand saxophonist Ben Castle (as heard on Jamie Cullum's recent album). It is a collection of 12 carefully chosen songs - all given a fresh, exciting edge. These include lesser-known tunes such as Where I Belong (by Lawrence Hopgood and Chicago jazz singer Kurt Elling) and Love Vibrations (by Horace Silver), in addition to a number of well-known standards like Bacharach and David’s A House is Not A Home and Cole Porter’s What Is This Thing Called Love.

”Alyson’s very natural musicianship shines through in this collection. She loves to tell a story,
and you can hear that she is inside the lyric and loving the songs. Alyson’s singing is
from the heart, delicate, real and passionate. A really impressive debut”
Claire Martin, award winning jazz singer and presenter of BBC Radio 3's Jazz Line-up
