Reviews |
09/01/2009 Al Brownlee, Manchester Evening News **** | Here’s a reedsman at the top of his powers, confident enough to kick off with unlovely blurting on bass clarinet (Beginners On Stage). Using overdubbing and loops, Julian Arguelles then turns into a one-man saxophone orchestra. The playing is luminous, with an unpredictable edge. He has fun with tonal extremes (1st Study in 12 Tone) and steadily augmenting riffs (Ghana) and is variously mysterious (Lisboa) and and exotic (Conversation). Compelling stuff, but necessarily self-reflective and inner directed. Those who prefer the cut and thrust of interactive musicianship are recommended to the excellent Chiasmus by the Kevin Mackenzie Quartet, featuring Julian Arguelles. | 10/12/2008 Jazzwise | “A fascinating glimpse into the world of one of the most expressive jazz saxophonists this country has produced in the last quarter of a century” | 10/12/2008 Jazzwise | "an album teeming with emotion…. as an improviser he wears his heart on his sleeve” |
