15/12/2010 The Musician | Captivating jazz… Jeremy Shoham (sax/clt), Neil Angilley (piano/keys), Phil Scragg (bass) and Rick Finlay (drums/perc) specialise in powerful, exciting jazz explorations. Opener ‘Don’t flex with me’ hits the ground running with brisk, muscular determination, while Neil’s Eastern tour de force, ‘Ali Baba and the Forty Thieves’, is evocative and marvellous. Main writer Jeremy demonstrates his far-reaching creative muse with the title cut's cinematic phrasing, and Rick blends tenderness and lyrical tones via discreet compositions ‘Mbira Mbump’ and ‘Saraweto’. A wonderful amalgamation of inspired writing and stunning playing. | 01/12/2010 ukjazzradio.com | Originally favouring klezmer and Middle Eastern-flavoured jazz, this cd reminds me of Weather Report's Mysterious Traveller … fine musicians, with Jeremy Shoham's sax & Neil Angilley's keyboard work always melodic … ‘Fault Lines’ is the straightest jazz number featuring swaggering funky piano & Oren Marshall puffing away on the Orenophone … it could make a good soundtrack to a film taking an oblique view of New Orleans. ‘Saraweto’ starts with a beautiful sax solo, a lonely voice against discreet electronics – quite ravishing … The title track is probably the best, where a gentle, ghostly, atmosphere is achieved by soprano sax over quietly rippling keyboards…it would be hard not to appreciate its subtle melancholy. | 27/11/2010 Jazz UK | Just East emerge after a five year hiatus with a bustling, searching, darkly atmospheric, tightly riffing journey into Middle Eastern scales - and that's just the first track of House of Leaves, opening an impressive set that juxtaposes pan-global influences with spirited playing, especially from Jeremy Shoham on soprano sax. | 08/11/2010 Chris Parker | …With Jeremy Shoham's agile but pungent reeds spearheading their music, pianist/keyboardist/accordionist Neil Angilley providing everything from gentle synthesized washes to rollicking jazz piano breaks, and the whole shebang firmly anchored by a taut, powerful rhythm section (consistently resourceful bassist Phil Scragg, vibrant drummer Rick Finlay), Just East are a lively, sometimes downright exhilarating outfit, and House of Leaves, their fifth album, is their best to date. |
