The debut album, Stretch, by the Rob Lavers Quartet was recorded in a live room. It brings the band into the same room as the listener, and captures the immediacy of the jazz language.
Track 2, Stretch, pulls the listener outside the realm of melody into a more intimate conversation between players. It then settles back into an exotic atmosphere. By contrast, Track 8, The Chan Clan, is a more explosive piece and delivers colorful and virtuosic solos. Overall this album encompasses a full spectrum from classical and latin to modern jazz.
Collie, Dekany, Perry and Lavers fuse effortlessly, displaying a coherent and vibrant interpretation of these 8 original compositions. The quartet’s 2005 UK tour, sponsored by Jazz Services, was well received in cities including Brighton, Leicester, Hull, York, Gloucester and London. |
Reviews |
25/02/2005 Y Theatre, Leicester, review by Nick Jones, Leicester Mercury | "This is a band with a great sense of ensemble and an individual sound." | 01/02/2005 Kenny Mathieson | Jazz Wise *** Stretch, Rob Lavers quartet
“Lavers comes across as a strong and resourceful performer on both tenor and soprano, and the interplay between the musicians has a nicely focused sense of mutual understanding. Lavers provides all of the compositions, and they offer an interesting variety of moods and approaches, cross referencing a series of different generic influences in the process, from classical sources as well as jazz and latin music. These originals furnish plenty of scope for creative responses." Kenny Mathieson,
