Biography of Tom Rust
I was born in Manchester and my musical interest started at about the age of 13 when l decided to follow my brother’s footsteps into the school band, initially playing alto and then later tenor saxophone.
I started singing at the age of 16 with various local groups, and then made my way to London at the age of 24. There I recorded a few tracks for Atlantic Records, chased record deals, and for my day job worked as an in-house programmer and engineer for Morrison-Leahy Music.
Around this time l met Nigel Goulding and formed the duo 'Step'.
We released a jazz dance track called 'If' which did well abroad, particularly in Japan. Over the years I came to love Jazz more and more, particularly after meeting the inspirational Pete Churchill at the Guild Hall. I then had the opportunity to perform with players such as Laurie Holloway, Jeff Clyne, Trevor Tomkins, Nick Weldon and Malcolm Edmonstone at the Ventnor Jazz Divas Festival (and yes I soon realised I was the only male diva there!).
I have continued to be lucky enough to work with some of the best jazz musicians in the UK, and recorded both of my recent albums “Saints & Singers” and “Are we there yet?” with the superb Malcolm Edmonstone Trio.
