"Have a safe journey home, look after your loved ones and . . . (audience joins in) Sleep In A Warm Bed". Tamworth Jazz Club’s coda to their weekly Wednesday gigs at The Globe Inn was really the only possible title for their 15th year celebration CD. They are what they say - a Real Jazz Club. This compilation, made possible by the generosity of dedicated musicians (all of whom have appeared at Tamworth Jazz Club) who have donated freely a diversity of their live and studio recordings, is a true reflection of improvised traditional jazz as it is regularly presented and played in the best of British jazz clubs up and down the country at the beginning of the 21st century. An absolute must for your collection". Dick Zealand October 2004

All of the bands will be heard at some time during the 2005 Tamworth Jazz Club season. You are welcome to drop in at…. The Only Place to be Wednesday 8.30pm.

‘Sleep in a Warm Bed’ Dick Zealand

1 Richard Leach’s 7 Stars Of Jazz Oh Baby Murphy 7m 53s

Oh Baby features Richard Leach’s 7 Stars of Jazz - a fitting opener. The most recently formed band. Led by Richard on trombone. Influenced by the 1960s and 70s Chicago style of the Alex Welsh Band.
2 Matt Palmer’s Millennium Jazz Band Petite Fleur Bechet 4m 57s

3 Matt Palmer’s Millennium Jazz Band East Coast Trot Cobb 3m 43s

The Millennium Jazz Band, were instantly offered Wednesday gigs when they formed. Under Matt Palmer’s inspirational leadership, quickly establishing themselves as regulars. Matt’s definitive Petite Fleur will delight Bechet fans. East Coast Trot Matt switches to clarinet as he ups the tempo.

4 Jim Fryer with Dave Moorwood’s ) Susie Naset/Kahn 3m 27s
5 Rascals Of Rhythm ) Rhythm King Trent/Hoover 5m 21s

Jim Fryer USA. Yearly pilgrimages to Tamworth since 1993 mean the freedom of the town must soon be due. The popular New England trombone master has played with many of the club’s featured bands. On this occasion heard with Dave Moorwood’s Rascals of Rhythm on Susie and Rhythm King

6 John Everett’s Red Dragon Jazz Men Who’s Sorry Now Snyder/Kalmar/Ruby 4m 12s
7 John Everetts’ Red Dragon Jazz Men Hindustan Wallace/Weeks 4m 37s

John Everett’s Red Dragon Jazz Men with Ruth Frith in vocal form Who’s Sorry Now followed by a rousing Hindustan. It is over half a century since I first heard John’s trumpet give the old standard his totally trad treatment. The sound is still spontaneous and as from the heart as it ever was.

8 Mellow Avstreih Fine And Mellow Holiday . 4m 35s
9 Mellow Avstreih It’s Only A Paper Moon Arlen/Harburg/Rose 4m 13s

Mellow Harmony Avstreih - the best kept secret in British Jazz. Having the pleasure of seeing the development of this exceptionally gifted vocalist over the last few years and hearing her effortlessly range from trio, traditional improvised and big band music has been a privilege. Why she has not yet emerged as an international name remains a mystery. Billie Holiday is recognised as a major influence. Ken Godfrey’s Central Jazzband are with her on Fine and Mellow and It’s Only a Paper Moon.

10 Wabash Jazzmen Blame It On The Blues Cooke/Whiting 4m 33s
11 Wabash Jazzmen Walking With The King Trad ar Challinor 3m 38s

Blame it on the Blues presented by The Wabash Jazzmen is followed by banjo leader Mark Challenor’s arrangement of the traditional Walking with The King. The individual style and presentation make the Wabash popular club regulars.

12 John Burnett’s Jazz Bandits New Orleans Carmichael . 4m 17s
13 John Burnett’s Jazz Bandits Choo Choo Ch’ Boogie Horton/Darling/Gabler 4m 57s

John Burnett trumpeter on our first track has been the number one choice with his Jazz Bandits for backing visiting international musicians for many years. With his own band he treats us to the Hoagy Carmichael fainéant New Orleans, followed by a jump jive wake up call Choo Choo Ch’ Boogie.

14 Old Fashioned Love Band My Honey’s Lovin’ Arms Meyer/Ruby 4m 35s
15 Old Fashioned Love Band Pretty Baby Van Alstyne/Jackson/Kahn . 4m 35s

The Old Fashioned Love Band - the enduring quality of the genre continues on My Honey’s Lovin’ Arms and Pretty Baby. Led by the trumpet of Mel Hill, who regularly presents jazz from BBC Radio Stoke. Inclusion of this band was a must.
