Reviews |
27/02/2006 Kenny Mathieson | Trianglehead have impressed as one of the most adventurous bands to launch on the recent Scottish jazz scene. Although all three musicians are perfectly at home in more conventional, straightahead settings, their work together in this trio places the greatest emphasis on free improvisation and experiment. One track, the spooky electronic 'Maths', was recorded live at Henry's Jazz Cellar in Edinburgh. The remainder was made in the studio, with all three players contributing material, either individually or as a group. The sequencing of the album has been approached intelligently, and the music slips easily back and forth between high-energy rants and slow, spacious sonic explorations, complete with odd and fascinating manipulation of instrumental timbre and musical textures. Stu Ritchie's drumming is beautifully judged in either mode. Kershaw continues to develop an individual voice on both alto and soprano, while Harrison is equally impressive on piano, organ or electric keyboards. The trio's intricate interplay and musical responsiveness is apparent at every disc, and this is a strong debut from a band which continues to grow in exciting and creative directions. |
