Biography of Dorian Ford

Dorian Ford started playing jazz in his early teens when he began regular attendance at a weekly workshop led by trumpeter, composer, broadcaster and music writer Ian Carr.

Playing alongside many musicians who went on to form the backbone of the London jazz renaissance of the 1980’s, he won a scholarship to Berklee College of Music where he received the prestigious Chick Corea Jazz Masters Award. Piano studies were with Donald
Brown, a regular in Art Blakey’s band at the time.

His commitment to the craft and tradition of piano playing has led to extensive classical training with eminent teachers; Stephany Tiernan, Anne Shasby and Katherina Wolpe, and master classes with Gwynth Prior and Brenda Lucas-Ogden.

Performances with: Brian Abrahams, Wayne Bachelor, Jim Black,
Christian Brewer, Damon Brown, Igor Butman, Ian Carr, Winston Clifford, Robert Fordjour, Alex Garnett, Geoff Gascoyne, Nathan Haines, Tom Herbert, Julian Joseph, Dill Katz, Colin Lazzarini, Ingrid Laubrook, Donny McCaslin, Marc Mondesir, Michael Mondesir, Mike Outram, Dave Okumu, Courtney Pine, Sebastian Rochford, Tom Skinner, Pete Wareham, Tim Whitehead, Steve Williamson.

He has recently finished work on a complete transcription of the Bill Evans album “How My Heart Sings” due to be published later this year.

Dorian currently has three music projects represented by a recording
of each:

Dorian Ford – Piano
A recording of free improvisations for solo piano (although three pieces have a church organ pedal drone) made in a church. The emphasis is on stillness and a purity of atmosphere. The pieces pay homage to Keith Jarrett, Morton Feldman, Persian classical music, John Adams and Paul Bley. All the pieces were recorded on the same day and appear on the CD in the order they were played.

Songs – Trio (Piano, Bass, Drums)
Playing ‘songs’ rather than ‘standards’ but as a jazz piano trio. The trio try to find the inner life inside the melody and structure of a classic song. Mostly the songs have their roots in the tradition of the American folk song (blues, country and gospel as its antecedents) and often written in the 60’s and 70’s.The trio is dedicated to finding the sacred in the secular.

Grass – Music by Other People (Saxophone, Piano, Bass, Drums)
A high concept ‘standards’ band playing their favourite tunes from
the straight-ahead and ECM songbook with an emphasis on the
beauty of melody.
