Since making their first live performance to a capacity crowd at the Brecon International Jazz Festival 2004, the Dave Stapleton Quintet have gone from strength to strength, resulting in this outstanding début album. Featuring a stellar line-up including Marcin Wright on saxophones, Jonny Bruce on trumpet, Dave Stapleton on piano, Paula Gardiner on bass and Elliot Bennett on drums this is a group of immense talent and individual flare. ‘When Life Was In Black And White’ presents 9 original Dave Stapleton compositions and includes special guest contributions by Deri Roberts on Trombone and British Jazz legend Paul Dunmall who delivers some scorching saxophone work on the closing track Lazy Blinker.

Inspired by the contemporary jazz of Manfred Eicher’s ECM label, Keith Jarrett’s American and European Quartets, free improvisation, the avant-garde (Keith Tippett and Paul Dunmall) and individual forms of film and contemporary composition (Philip Glass, Yann Tierson) Stapleton has developed a profound authority and distinct identity in his work. Incorporating unusual time signatures, combined with infectious melodies and irresistible grooves he maintains a widescreen vision that allows the space for some exciting improvisation either in a free context or over an existing framework. Dave Stapleton has always been interested in the relationship between jazz and free improvisation, and his linear explorations have now grown to give this Cardiff based Quintet a unique and compelling sound.

Accompanied by a cast of musicians already well established in their own right on the Welsh jazz scene, as well as performing with some of the top names in British jazz, Stapleton has assembled a group of precocious talent certain to help him rise to the forefront of fresh faced, contemporary Jazz in the UK.

Reviews

01/09/2005 Big Issue

“An outstanding album by a fresh face at UK Jazz. The tone is fluid and compelling with motifs, runs and cut up rhythms. Trumpet and saxophone spar and whirl with mind beguiling verve and the rich piano work is exceptional throughout. Enjoy”.
