Nominated as ‘Album of the Year’ in the 2008 BBC Jazz Awards, and as ‘Best Ensemble’ in the UK Parliamentary Jazz Awards, this debut album from Arnie Somogyi’s Ambulance immediately caught the jazz world’s attention.

Self-styled ‘specialists in musical accident and insurgency’, Ambulance is led by outstanding British jazz bassist Arnie Somogyi, and features legendary trumpet and flugelhorn player Eddie Henderson from the US, plus four of the UK’s finest jazz musicians - Tim Lapthorn (piano, Fender Rhodes, melodica), Paul Booth (tenor and soprano saxophones, bass clarinet), Dave Smith (drums and percussion) and Rob Townsend (tenor and soprano saxophones, alto flute, bass clarinet and laptop!).

The band first created a stir at their live debut in November 2004 at Ronnie Scott’s in Soho attracting both press and public acclaim. In 2006 they were awarded the first-ever jazz development residency at the prestigious Snape Maltings venue and music campus in Aldeburgh, Suffolk. This led to a whole new repertoire of original material for the new ‘Accident and Insurgency’ album, released by Linn Records in January 2008.

Combining high-energy delivery with compellingly inventive and lyrical ideas, the new album attracted significant critical acclaim, including 4-star reviews in The Guardian, The Times, BBC Music Magazine and Jazzwise, among others. The band has since performed live sessions for BBC radio and their live tours have featured many times as Gigs of the Week in the Guardian, plus Critic's Choice in Time Out, and been tipped on Claire Martin’s ‘must see’ list on BBC Radio 3’s Jazz Line Up.

Ambulance continues to impress audiences with its musical inventiveness and energetic live performances at venues around the country.

Reviews

29/02/2008 Jazzwise

'Hip as hell'

07/02/2008 The Guardian, **** Live Review @ Ronnie Scott's

The six musicians make an overwhelming case for jazz that is visceral, intellectual and disciplined, while wowing audiences of musicians, fans, hacks and punters.

06/02/2008 Time Out - Gigs of the Week, Critic’s Choice

'Arnie Somogyi leads his cheekily named band that mixes snapping grooves, archly syncopated arrangements and top-drawer improvising, all on his superb new album 'Accident And Insurgency’ … killer band’.

05/02/2008 Jazzwise ****

‘That unlikely mix of gentle attentiveness between musicians, a caring, unfussy, love of detail and a capacity to laugh and robustly stretch out makes this a joyous recording indeed.’

04/02/2008 BBC Music Magazine ****

‘A dynamic set that's full of surprises, tumbling chord and tempo changes, atmospheric effects and quicksilver improvised solo runs.’

03/02/2008 Straight No Chaser

‘Original compositions of such measure, mystique and eccentricity that it's incredibly hard not to keep rushing back for another dose.’

02/02/2008 The List ****

‘Bristling with inventive manipulations of instrumental sonority and timbre, surprising chordal developments and effective shifts in tempo.’

01/02/2008 The Times ****

‘Varied, thoughtful and consistently engaging’

10/01/2008 California radio - Desert Island Jazz on KCSM-FM

‘One of the best recordings of 2007 from any label in any country.'

08/01/2008 New Zealand Radio - George FM, Auckland

‘The best jazz has me shaking my head in wonder and makes me smile, or if I am really lucky it makes me laugh out loud. There are many times when listening to this new CD by UK bass player Arnie Somogyi that I smile, there are a few times when I laugh out loud. It is delightful, challenging music.’
