Biography of Jeffrey Benson
Jeffrey's main influence in his listening years was Lester Young. He became fascinated with his breathy tone, wonderful style and lyrical improvisation.
This encouraged Jeffrey to seriously study the tenor saxophone in 1964. He enjoyed a twelve year quintet stint with fellow tenor player Dave Gelly and subsequently many duo gigs with guitarist Charles Alexander with whom he has recorded two CD's. 'When lights are Low' with Jeff Clyne on Bass and Trevor Tomkins on Drums was released in 1997 and 'A Handful of Stars' with Chris Rodel on Bass and Matt Home on Drums followed in 2000 to much acclaim
He also continues to teach jazz improvisation in his home town of London.
