Appearances by

John Etheridge

firewire is a two-volume work, and Christian's fifth solo release. It charts the progress of the playing, composing and band-leading talents of this remarkable British musician over the last three years.

Christian is perhaps best known for his expertise in the hot-club style. But he continues to pursue his goal to popularise his instrument in other areas of jazz, and to bring this music to a wider audience. This broad-minded stance is unambiguous and the best evidence for this is to be found on firewire. Violin, viola and electric violin are all comprehensively exploited, the latter colourfully orchestrating many tracks with looping, overdrive, wah and other FX. Conversely Christian's acoustic violin is a pure unadulterated unamplified signal - a characteristic audiences recognise as a trademark.

firewire is notable also for the sensational band assembled. David Gordon is supreme in the piano department, even playing some McGlaughlin-esque harpsichord on one cut (he is an accomplished harpsichordist working with the likes of Andrew Manze, English Concert and Respectable Groove). Ole Rasmussen and Tom Hooper in double bass and drum roles respectively create tangible drama and excitement in the rhythm section.

Two formidable guest musicians add extra richness. From Perth, Western Australia, tabla maestro Neil Craig beautifies Slowfood and Wobbly Tooth, whilst UK guitar thaumaturge John Etheridge injects a dose of rock n roll into There She Is.

Reviews

03/01/2006 John Dilworth

"Could Ponty have done this at his best on a fine day with a following wind with Zappa producing, Metheny arranging and Herbie on keys? I seriously doubt it."

John Dilworth, luthier, The Strad

12/12/2005 Jack Massarik

"If you know Christian Garrick as an elegant Hot Club de France violinist in the Thirties style of Stephane Grappelli, prepare to be amazed. His new double album, with keyboarder David Gordon leading an exceptional rhythm section, not only sounds totally 21st century but also swings like a hotel roof in a hurricane.

Alternating acoustic violin with loops, overdrive, wah-wah and other synth effects, Christian writes attractive material and burns through his solos with an impetus and invention few suspected he had. Think of electric Chick Corea or Polish violinist Michael Urbaniak in their free-flowing prime. Christian has been consolidating until now, but with this fine recording, his time has arrived."

Jack Massarik, London Evening Standard
