Reviews

01/01/2001 The London Evening Standard

"The Brazilians, masters of world soccer, expect all top players, even defenders ,to be on first name terms with the ball . So too with jazz. You can impress listeners with your bright ideas and dazzle them with your technique , but you'll never win their total attention until you are intimately acquainted with the beat. Rhythmic awareness, for every microsecond of every number, is the cornerstone of jazz ,and Jonathan Gee appreciates that . A dedicated acoustic pianist ( he does'nt own an electric keyboard, but does have a grand piano ), his most obvious influences are Herbie Hancock and Keith Jarrett, both great masters of rhythm. Passionate but unflashy, Gee hasn't yet achieved their technical bravado, but for rhythmic sophistication he's right up there .

There's a Jarrett-like moment in the title track of this CD when he bends a phrase playfully around the beat - in front of, on top of and behind it - before landing cleanly on his feet and scooting nimbly off to the next idea. Fewer pros than you might imagine can do this, just as few professional footballers can actually use both their feet. Some players misjudge a teammate's run and pass to the wrong place. Others are carried away by their own momentum and trip up. Not Gee. No matter how urgent or complex the move, there's an underlying stability and relaxation about his playing that draws listeners closer .

Bassist Steve Rose and drummer Winston Clifford never put a foot wrong, Clifford in particular applying a rare sensitivity to his fast reflexes and light touch. The album was recorded live at Ronnie Scott's, wher they regularly work opposite international stars ( this week with funkmeister Roy Ayers ) and enjoy a reputation as crowd-pleasers who relish a challenge and a live audience. Listen to their momentum on 'Rathbone Place', the delicacy of 'Raiders of the Lost Legato ', the ingenuity of 'Because' and the lyricism of 'When I Fall In Love'- and you might want to check them out in person".
