01/01/1998 Time Out | "Gee is a compelling pianist and his debut album is outstanding. An intricately lyrical player, he is firmly out of the Keith Jarrett school; but has a habit of worrying away at a fragment of melody, scattering it across the beats differently each time, that is totally individual. "Closer To" features bassist Steve Rose and drummer Winston Clifford who, with Gee, has grown into one of the most consistently inspiring musicians around. Every track is strong, but particularly fine moments are Gee's own oddly beautiful "Prayer To Love", and the ten minutes of intense concentration and creativity that is "In A Sentimental Mood" ' |
