Appearances by Jim Mullen, Trudy Kerr |
After six full years touring and recording with Jamie Cullum, acclaimed bass player/composer/arranger Geoff Gascoyne returns with a new album, his sixth as leader, and a new jazz quartet. Pop Bop is a journey through Geoff's favourite pop songs from the last 30 years, newly arranged for jazz quartet and featuring the legendary Jim Mullen on guitar, fellow Cullum collaborator Sebastiaan de Krom on drums, and fiery young Australian Graeme Blevins on alto sax |
Reviews |
26/10/2009 Chris Parker - Vortex Site | 'A collection of some of my favourite pop songs re-arranged for jazz quartet' is bassist Geoff Gascoyne's description of this thirteen-track album, and that's exactly what it is, complete with spoof 'pop hits' cover in appropriately garish colours. To assist him, he's assembled a whip-smart but elegant band: guitarist Jim Mullen, alto/soprano saxophonist Graeme Blevins and drummer Sebastiaan de Krom, and they inject pep and muscular energy into everything from Rufus Wainwright's 'Going to a Town' to Earth Wind and Fire's 'Star', with Trudy Kerr guesting on vocal for Gladys Knight and the Pips' 'Seconds'. Both the gutsy Blevins and the neat but powerful Mullen turn in flawless performances, and the Gascoyne/de Krom partnership (whether the former's on electric or acoustic instrument) is a tried and tested one, so the album is bright, snappy and immediately accessible and (if the present writer is anything to go by) will please even fiftysomething jazz snobs entirely unfamiliar with every tune except the Supremes' 'The Happening' |
