Biography of Jeff Chambers
Jeff grew up in the 60s and was fully aware of the revolution in music that was taking place at the time. Underground music was creative, exciting and drew on many sources of inspiration. Early country blues, Indian raga and free improvised jazz had equal influence. (Indeed, Jeff's first LP in 1970 contained youthful pastiches of both Archie Shepp and Frank Zappa). Hatfield and The North came marvellously to the rescue in the pop musical desert of the 70s. Jeff by now was also listening to Nucleus, SOS, SME, Mike Gibbs and Mike Westbrook. Since then, it is modern jazz that has become Jeff's love and vehicle of expression.
The Jeff Chambers Variable n-tet is a 14 piece band whose sound is skewed toward the brass end of the spectrum. All the music is composed by Jeff and draws on the depth and richness of the brass chorale, the harmonic language of modern jazz and the quirkiness and humour of popular music. Its influences range from Kenny Wheeler, Mike Gibbs and Loose Tubes to early Mothers of Invention and Hatfield and The North, the best band to have come from the intensively creative 'Canterbury Scene' of the 60s and 70s. In other words, this music is sonorous, with full and rich modern jazz harmonies underpinning memorable melodies and exciting jazz solos.
