After its debut album 'talking idly' (AS121), the bluegoat quartet presents another high quality output entitled 'high tide'. Although the new material, composed in London, is at times flirting with a pop conception, 'high tide' is still very much a jazz album, combining clever composing and intriguing improvisation. The title-piece opens with a light-hearted odd-meter piano riff leading to a beautiful little melody floating on it. The group's guest Franck Tortiller sets off on a solo that reveals the powers that were hidden underneath the theme, and leader Jodok Hess, weaving the beginning of his solo into Tortiller's last few bars, adds his own innovative contribution to the topic. Asking similar questions, but coming up with different answers, every single one of the following tunes tells its own story. New saxophist Adrian Pflugshaupt contributes many outstanding solos and Friedli and Fischer show their class as accompanists from the very start. An album that clearly displays a group that brought itself to a new level - and that leaves the listener wishing for more to come. |
