NYJOS recorded the CD during its highly successful Summer Tour in July/August 2006, directed by NYJOS Alumni, jazz pianist Malcolm Edmonstone and jazz drummer Andrew Bain. The repertoire includes American big band standards and music by great Scottish composers, such as Duncan Lamont’s Carnival of the Animals. The CD also features Scotland Suite, a NYOS commission by Malcolm Edmonstone that was world-premiered during the summer tour.
“When we programmed the summer tour of The National Youth Jazz Orchestra of Scotland we wanted a balance between traditional American big band repertoire and Scottish composed and arranged big band works; the origins of Jazz meeting the musical traditions of Scotland. While we could not record all the music, we have all side represented on this CD.” Andrew Bain
“I was commissioned to write a suite for the 2006 National Youth Jazz Orchestra of Scotland and from the very start I had two objectives – firstly to feature my longstanding musical partner Andrew Bain and secondly to rework existing songs from Scotland. Whilst researching songs for potential inclusion, Pete Churchill introduced me to an incredible compendium which dates from 1760 – ‘William McGibbon’s Collection of Scottish Songs.’ I have always relished the opportunity to work with existing melodies and the ones I have chosen for inclusion in the suite, I believe, have stood the test of time remarkably.” Malcolm Edmonstone.

23/12/2006 Rob Adams, The Herald | "If the Kellock-Steele-Milligan is regarded as a golden age of Scottish jazz, the next crop of musicians is determined to keep the Saltire flying. This CD, based around arrangements of three old Scots songs, finds the orchestra sound far more mature than their youth might suggest. There are several excellent solos from pianist Alan Benzie and tenor saxophonist Grant Irvine investigates Auld Lang Syne with a light, appropriately Scottish approach. The well-drilled fun of Duncan Lamont's Carnival of the Animals suite and two standards offer further evidence of energy, confidence and no end of promise."
| 08/12/0006 Kenny Mathieson, The Scotsman | "The second recording from the NYJOS features two suites from Scottish composers. Malcolm Edmonstone is the ensemble's co-director, and his settings of old Scots songs from the McGibbons collection, are nicely put together and capably played by the young band." |
