Biography of Ben Davis
Ben Davis studied at Guildhall (London) and later at the Banff Conservatoire (Canada). He is one of Europe's top jazz string players. His cross-over string quintet Basquiat Strings intertwines the written and the improvised imperceptibly. His own compositions in this field are often emotional epics with a conception far beyond the expected. Ben has been a part of Django Bates’ Delightful Precipice in its early days, where he met Barak Schmool, and the demand for his quality of rhythmic string playing has taken him to play and tour with Julian Joseph, Mike Westbrook, Django Bates, Ingrid Laubrock’s Quintet, french cellist Vincent Courtois, Evan Parker amongst many, many others.
He has recorded with Claire Martin, Huw Warren, Christine Tobin, Eska, Jamiroquai, D-Influence,Julia Biel, Oriole. Has led his own quartet featuring Chris Biscoe as well as a string quintet, Basquiat Strings.
Ben Davis teaches jazz cello in the Trinity College of Music Jazz Studies.
