Biography of Nick Homes

Nick Homes was born in Leigh-on-sea, England in 1966 Nick and started playing the saxophone by ear in his teens after hearing Barbara Thompson at Ronnie Scotts Jazz club. He used to play along to her records and soon formed his first band Vlad Tepes - a mixture of jazz and rock inspired by the ghoully charcter that Count Dracula was based on.

Obsessed with the sound of the saxophone and improvising he immersed himself as much as he could in playing, studying and listening to music. At the age of 18 Nick went to Berklee college of Music in Boston. "At that time I was totally mesmerized by North American Jazz so it was a dream for me to go there and actually study with some of my idols". After 2 years he felt the need to get away from the influence of the Berklee Sound and switched to private studies with Boston based legendary saxophonsist guru Jerry Bergonzi of Dave Brubeck fame.

Back in London in 1996 Nick set up his own label DogsDinnerMusic (Inspired by his dog Trevor) as vehicle for his own music after having spent time on the London Jazz scene playing with many diverse/eclectic groups. That year he released his debut recording with his band "The Dirty Dogs" called "Free Lunch" which was recorded in his basement studio in South London and heard extensively on the radio in Japan, Australia and New York . Nicks other 6 cd's- Revenge of the Chicken, Not Tonight, Walk in the Sun, Collected Dreams and the forthcomingThe Juicer have charted his interest in different musical styles and search for his own voice.

Throughout his career Nick has been interested in education and taught at Goldsmiths College in London and the Royal College at Haslemere. In 2004 he published some of the material he had written for his students in the form of 3 Jazz Duets books for saxophone. His aim has been to write and perform original music that pays homage to the North American Jazz legacy without being overwhelmed by it and at the same time reflect that he is European and has been influenced by that part of the world. As Nick says " At some stage even though I loved the Jazz Tradition I wanted to move on, rather than rehash what had come before in an acrobatic way and also reflect that I come from Europe." In 2005 Nick moved to Buenos aires Argentina, where he now lives.
