The name of the jazz combo « Intuition » means « inspiration », which is also the title of a Lennie Tristano’s composition. The reference is of course to free improvisation and melodical lines, although avoiding any stereotypes. Lennie Tristano is, together with Parker, Gillespie, Miles and Monk, one of the more important figures of modern jazz, and his heritage is kept alive thanks to names like Konitz, Mark Turner, Kurt Rosenwinkel and Brad Mehldau. His compositions, and those of his followers Lee Konitz, Warne Marsh and Billy Bauer, represent for the members of « Intution » an important task. The hamonic and rhythmical textures form a rich source of ideas and lines, which are available to the soloists for their improvisations. The majority of Tristano’s compositions are based on standards and therefore are a good starting point for free melodical improvisation. Inversedly, the first 8 bars of the Tristano’s solos on top of the line- up are used as a base line for the « Lennie Line », where both compositions are based on the harmony of « All of me ». As it often happens with extraordinary personalities (Miles, Coltrane, Monk, etc.) there is the risk of losing oneself in the useless attempt of historically correct and faithful imitation of style. For this reason the arrangements of the themes were specially re-written and transferred to a more up-to-date jazz context, in which at least one element was left in its original state, either it be melody, harmony, instruments, tone or rhythm. Besides Tristano’s and Konitz’s compositions there are few of Intuition’s own that found a place in the album. The result is a diversified and poliedric programme, a hommage to this enigmatic and genial pianist. A « work in progress » getting nearer to Lennie Tristano.
