Appearances by Martin Speake |
Nikki Iles and I met for the first time properly at the Glamorgan Summer School where we were both teaching in 1996. We had found a spare moment to practice after a full day of teaching and played some tunes together. It felt effortless to play together and our rhythmic and melodic sense seemed compatible. We talked about music and found we had common influences - Bill Evans, Lee Konitz, Paul Motian, Charlie Haden, John Taylor, Kenny Wheeler, Charlie Parker, Paul Bley, Ravel, Debussy, Vaughan Williams to name a few. I thought it would be a good idea to record so we each brought some tunes and then at the end of the seesion with half and hour to spare we played some freely improvised duets. We both felt that these 'miniatures' worked really well and so I programmed them between each of the structured tunes in the order that we recorded them. I hope you enjoy listening to the music as much as we did playing it. Martin Speake
